The 2010 United States Census is very important for the future of our state. Millions of dollars in federal aid will be awarded each year for the next decade based upon the upcoming census count. That is money which could help educate our children, upgrade our roads and improve health care. But that money could go to another state that does a better job getting more of its citizens counted.

Census figures will also determine our voice in national affairs. We believe South Carolina is very close to gaining a seventh seat in the United States House of Representatives. To gain that added influence, we need to make sure that every South Carolina resident is counted.

The good news is that the census form is short and simple. It should take just 10 minutes to complete the 10 questions. When the form comes in the mail this spring, I hope you will join me in making sure that we count!
